Local Life In Motion in Westgate house Arts gallery. An exhibition of work curated by Peter Green (Link to profile). "This display is a visual portrayal of aspects of the town and it’s inhabitants through my own eyes and honest perspective. The town in which I grew up in has changed a lot over the years, and continues to do so, but I’ve attempted to depict here the more-or-less original layout, building, architecture and art of the ‘New Town’. On the flipside of this, when sketching and studying the population of Harlow, I have tried to communicate the ever-changing face of the community, without prejudice of background, character, age or race as opposed to the original post-war town, ‘modern’ structures of which many of you I’m sure will recognize." Imaginary Planets in Westgate house Arts gallery. An exhibition of work curated by Martyn Leggett. The drawings in this exhibition came from an initial idea of making large drawings in charcoal, using different grades of charcoal to create a range of tones from velvety blacks to soft greys. The subject matter to begin with was the seascape, conveying the feeling of water gently lapping on a pebble beach. These drawings had no other content and were essentially ‘mood’ pieces indicating a sense of solitary calmness. The imaginary planet drawings then developed as stand alone works. My interest centred on the surface texture and the suggested forms that came out of the drawing process itself. Although the images resemble planets out there in space, the drawings are not intended to be astronomical studies, they just represent ideas of planets that provide a rather neat motif on which to make these planet like drawings. gatehouseLIVE event 2 (explorations of the banal) in the gatehouseARTS gallery Explorations of the banal, showcased an extensive range of work, all exploring the subject of the everyday; performances that attempted to integrate art and life. Taking inspiration from the small boundaries in life, where art and the banal cross over, the exhibition took that which we consider to be the everyday and put it in in the spotlight, making art from the over looked or under appreciated. The performances invited the audience to interact with the work; asking them to use their own bodies as tools, without which, the exhibition wouldn't exist. Charles Long at the Courtyard Arts Gallery 'Remembered Landscapes' Courtyard Arts, Hertford An exhibition of work by a single person at an external gallery. "I am concerned abount depicting landscape from a deep fascination with its elemental nature. Objects and their fragmented state found within our environment make a profound impact upon me and 'nature in the raw' - erosion from wind and rain, sun and heat is the stuff of my paintings. This is coupled with an abiding interest in structure, both natural and man-made. I believe they can be complementary. The other two elements of my work are relection and refraction - these are an abiding passion. It is the illusory quality which occurs when I try to 'disrupt' the picture plane, yet retain the integrity of my image making." Content and curation by Charles Long (Link to Profile) | |

The first of these events, 'Somewhere Between Here and Home' showcased work that explores the notion of identity and belonging; traversing or transcending; the attempt to find a destination, or the strive to get back to one. Comprising of performance, installation and experimental sound the audience were taken on a journey of nostalgia and longing; evoking memories of the past and that special place each of us can call home.
